Think beyond the taps
Toilets, storage tanks, washing machines, dishwashers and automatic garden systems may use water without anyone opening a tap. A shared supply can register someone else’s use. Write down which known uses were inactive when you noticed the movement.
Record rather than guess
If the meter is safely accessible, note its reading and the time, following your supplier’s instructions. Do not enter unsafe chambers or operate unfamiliar shared valves. Photographs can help a specialist understand exactly what you saw without relying on an estimate of the change.
Isolation helps define the question
An appropriate investigation considers the meter and valve arrangement before interpreting a test. Passing valves and unknown branches can complicate the result. The aim is to establish a suspect section, then select detection methods suited to that section rather than surveying every surface indiscriminately.
Share the layout you know
Tell us where the meter and internal stop valve are, whether the supply serves an outbuilding and whether neighbours share the route. Include supplier notices and previous findings. These details help us scope the residential job and decide what access is likely to be needed.
