A quiet house can still use water
A meter change while nobody is opening taps may deserve investigation, but automatic appliances, toilets, tanks or shared supplies can still use water. Before concluding that an underground pipe has failed, identify which known uses may have operated during the period and whether the meter relates to your property alone.
Keep consistent observations
Where the meter is your own and safely accessible, follow your water supplier’s guidance for checking readings. Record the times and conditions so the change can be interpreted. Do not enter unsafe chambers or operate unfamiliar communal valves. Photographs of the display can help explain what you observed to the supplier or engineer.
Use isolation to narrow the question
A suitable investigation considers the arrangement of meters, stop valves and branches. A passing valve or unknown external supply can complicate a test. The objective is to establish which section is supported as the source of loss before deciding whether specialist ground listening or another tracing method is appropriate.
An underground leak may have no surface puddle
Water can drain away through the ground or move along buried layers before appearing elsewhere. A dry-looking drive does not rule out a private supply loss. Conversely, a wet patch is not proof of the pipe position. Known routes, pipe materials and corroborating findings help decide where access should be proposed.
Retain the repair evidence
After an agreed repair, keep the report, invoice and relevant readings. If you discuss an allowance or adjustment with the supplier, follow its own eligibility rules and process. The documents support that conversation but cannot guarantee a bill reduction, just as an insurance report cannot guarantee policy reimbursement.
